 Ford's Artificial Intelligence Investment

Ford’s technology isn’t exactly lacking but the automaker is taking steps to ensure that its autonomous vehicles are ready for production with no delays. A massive $1 billion investment into a small startup is scheduled to help the American automaker push forward as usual.

The manufacturer plans to invest $1 billion in Argo AI over the next five years. The funds will go towards developing a virtual driver platform designed to operate self-driving vehicles.

Brian Salesky and Peter Rander, founders of Argo AI, aren’t exactly new to the technology. Salesky was a part of Google’s self-driving program while Rander headed up Uber’s own self-driving program. The $1 billion investment will allow the startup to increase the number of engineers to 200 by the end of the year.

Argo AI will develop the system that actually controls self-driving vehicles without any human interaction. The software team will be a part of the development process and work closely with Ford’s own engineers. The automaker has been working on its own software in-house with great success over the past few years.

Ford aims to have autonomous vehicles operating and in production by 2021.
